Quirky aspects of living with Swedes

Image 1. Click to open in original size.

Being someone from outside Scandinavia you may find parts of our habits and culture a bit odd. I found a fun summary of many of them on ScandiKitchens website.

  • They make you leave your shoes in the hallway

  • They announce when its time to pee

  • The heating is on max

  • The only decorating color is white

  • No visible souvenirs in homes

  • Candles always and everywhere

  • Separate duvets in the double bed

  • Specialist kitchen equipment, like “osthyvel” and “smörkniv”

  • More nudity

  • Odder breakfasts

  • Fixed dinner times (18.00)

  • New meal manners

  • “Fredagsmys” (Cosy Friday)

  • “Lördagsgodis” (Saturday sweets)

  • Salty licorice

  • Weekend hiking

  • Eurovision mania during spring every year

  • Flags mania

  • Recycling is a mandatory religion, and the recycling center is a popular weekend destination

Looking through the list, I realize many things are related to food and eating. We apparently are extra odd when it comes to meals and edibles.

Read all juicy details at the website:

Do you have anything to add to the list? Post a comment.

Oh god… the cheese slicers Laughing out loud I had absolutely no idea what it was when I moved, and had to be told by my housemate at the time!

#4 I saw a really bizarre image of a natural landscape with a random cheese slicer in the middle in a art museum in Uppsala, I did not get the reference at the time!

And why is it you have separate duvets in a double bed?

#3: How did you slice hard cheese to put on a sandwich before Sweden? 🙂 #4: If each has their own duvet, they are more likely to wake up with it in the morning. If there’s a shared duvet, the chance decreases to 50 percent on average. Plain convenience. 😀

#5 Just by using a sharp knife I guess? Often I would have cheese sandwiches so I would just use the bread knife out of laziness  Laughing
