I’m constantly reminded how lucky I am to live where I live. :-)

Denmark placed 2nd and Finland 3rd, but where is Norway? I didn't even find it on the list. Strange.

“Although Europe has managed to maintain its footing in terms of world innovation, China is fast closing the gap, with its rate of innovation growing up to three times faster than that of the EU.”

We can't be lazy.

I find Portugal's ranking quite surprising given how low their HDI is.

#4 It stands for Human Development Index. Countries are ranked on a scale (0 being the lowest and 1.000 being the highest) in regards to their per capita income, life expectancy and standard of information. Portugal, despite being a more innovative country, ranks lower than you expect, in 41st place.
