Traffic deaths in Sweden at a record low 2017

Image 1. Click to open in original size.

253 people died in traffic accidents in Sweden in 2017. It is the lowest death rate in modern times. 20 years ago 550 people died in Swedish traffic. After that Swedish authorities instituted a zero death vision for traffic.

Since 2007 there is a national goal of lowering the death toll to 220 by 2020. If all cars slowed down by 2 kilometers an hour, about 30 deaths could be avoided every year. Unfortunately, the number of drunk drivers is increasing, too few cyclists use helmets and the road systems are modernized too slowly. That likely means the 220 goal won't be reached on time.

At the very least it's good that progress has continued rather than stalled. Maybe some more laws or an increase in safety in cars again will see the target met.

I think that when we get self-driving cars, traffic deaths will decrease significantly.
