Worth knowing as a tourist in cashless Sweden

Sweden is one of the most digital societies in the world. Coming as a tourist to Sweden can be a shock if you have not prepared for a cashless society. You can walk into a store or restaurant, and they will say they don’t take cash.

I am a Swede and has lived here all my life, so I’m used to it and think it is mostly good. I don’t remember when I last carried cash, and I wouldn’t be able to tell what Swedish coins and bills look like. The old ones were replaced some years ago, and I have had no reason to learn what the new ones look like.

Those ablest to prepare you for a trip to Sweden is other tourists and new residents who have gone through what you will go through. The Local has surveyed them so you can avoid the pitfalls.

I remember exchanging a load of cash before coming to Sweden! I was surprised by how many places were cashless!

All the best, Leia

Not that many years ago there were almost daily reports in the media of robberies of, first, banks and, later, cash transporting vehicles (or even cash depots). That’s all history now.

It is even hard to get rid of cash if you are unfortunate enough to get some (like if you sell something second hand). Not even the banks want to deal with them. In the whole of Stockholm I think my bank only accepts cash in one specialist branch. When you come to one of the other branches with cash they will refer you to the special cash branch, so that’s where a lot of black money ends up when people try to get them into the system again. You must have a plausible story of how the money came into your possession and they will ask for receipts or other proof to corroborate the story before they let you deposit them.
